Don't let anyone talk you into installing that old felt underlayment. We always install a synthetic underlayment on every roof we do. This is basically like having a tarp covering your decking as a backup to your shingles.

Starter shingles should always be used when replacing your roof. Do not let a roofer try to use a typical 3-tab shingle as a cheap alternative. Starter shingles have a tar strip about 1 inch from the edge of the shingle. That tar strip on the starter shingle provides a tight seal around the perimeter of your roof, to minimize wind and water damage during a storm.

Literally capping off your roof with the right ventilation system is imperative...especially in Georgia. Many roofers still use box vents to ventilate their roofs. Ridge vent offers a superior syphoning effect to draw air in from the eaves and vent air out at the highest points of your attic. This helps to keep your attic at a temperature that prevents damage do your decking and shingles.
